Practicum:
- Exploring Careers students begin their placements today!
- Amanda found a new program opportunity for students thinking about a career in the legal field. Chicago High School students who are interested in learning more about legal careers are welcome to join volunteer attorneys from the Chicago Bar Association at the Law Explorers Program. The group meets bi-weekly a the Chicago Bar Association Building, beginning October 18, to learn about careers in the legal field. The Law Explorers Program helps students improve important life skills, including public speaking, negotiation, and advocacy skills. This opportunity is open to all Resurrection students and takes place outside of school on Wednesday evenings from 5:30 - 7:00. Additional details will be posted to the class level pages on Schoology.
- Shoutout to Amanda for coming up with the idea to include a Student Highlight in the blog and for getting our first one together!
Rankin:
- We have asked teachers from various departments to attend a PD conference in November on best practices for teaching students with ADHD, anxiety, trauma, stress, depression, etc. We will then ask those teachers to present an in-house PD based on what they learned for the rest of our faculty next semester.
- The first 4 weeks of RtI are complete. We have already noticed improvements in our students, and hope to see even more as we continue with the program.
- We now have 10 new students approved through CPS to work with Ahsan Karim.
- Briana is looking into a potential college visit field trip for ACT Prep juniors in the Rankin Program.
General Counseling:
- The Transition group will start next Thursday during seminar B. This is a group intended to support students with difficult home lives.
- The sophomore intake meetings have been going really well. Students were very responsive to the online Sophomore survey. An outcome of the survey was that the majority of the sophomore class struggle with stress/anxiety as well as a concern about low grades/test scores. Sheri and Mary have been encouraging students to seek resources like teacher support and the Think Tank to address the academic concerns. We have also been working closely with he students on managing their stress/anxiety.
- The generalist counselors have been communicating with parents on a variety of concerns including social emotional, outside referrals, and academic supports.
STUDENT HIGHLIGHT
Emilee Martorelli '18
Emilee during her Emergency Department placement at Presence Resurrection Medical Center.
Q: Why did you decide to take Practicum?
A: I decided to take Practicum because I knew it would give me opportunities to experience certain careers firsthand.
Q: You're very interested in pursuing a career in the healthcare field. Which rotations will you be completing this semester?
A: I just completed my last day in the Emergency Department at Presence Resurrection Medical Center. My upcoming rotations will be in Social Work, Occupational Therapy, and The Family Birthplace. I am also shadowing at Infusion Care of St. Francis Hospital.
Q: How would you describe your experiences in the Emergency Department?
A: My experiences in the Emergency Department have been life changing! I've learned so much about the human body, and I've gotten to view things from a different perspective. I have realized that I am able to learn and catch onto things fast. I'm now considering becoming an ED nurse!
Q: What advice do you have for students who participate in the Practicum Program?
A: I would say that anyone in Practicum has to go into their placements with a very open mind. You don't know what you're going to walk into when you get to your site, so it's best to be open to new experiences and people!
